Above-Ground Pool Safety: How to Reduce Risk and Improve Enjoyment
Remember, above-ground pool safety refers to more than just people’s ability to swim. It also involves the nature of the entire swimming environment. Pools can be hazardous if not properly maintained or used with caution. Therefore, bring the following practices into your pool experience so people can use your pool safely.
1. Have rules for pool use.
Having rules for above-ground pool use is a non-negotiable part of pool safety. These rules include
- no diving
- no running around the pool
- no horseplay
It’s also important to have rules for swimming alone. Children should always swim with an adult present, and non-swimmers should wear a life jacket. Make sure everyone who uses the pool is aware of the rules and understands the importance of following them.

6. Wear sunscreen.
Swimming for extended periods of time can lead to sunburn, which can be painful and potentially dangerous to your health. To protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays, make sure to wear sunscreen with a high SPF rating. Reapply sunscreen every two hours, especially after swimming. Sunscreen not only helps to prevent sunburn, but it also helps to reduce the risk of skin cancer.
