The strength and durability of a Doughboy® Pool give you multiple installation options for your backyard. Depending on your situation, this can seem like a benefit or a challenge. After all, so many of us are used to thinking of a pool installation as either above-ground or in-ground. Doughboy Pools, on the other hand, can be installed above-ground, semi-onground, or even fully recessed for an in-ground pool look.
With this knowledge, the choices can be daunting. But don’t worry. In this blog, we’ll unpack the various installation options for your Doughboy Pool. That way, you can approach your backyard with new inspiration on how to incorporate a swimming pool for generations of family fun.
Above-Ground Pool Installation
Local Codes
The first thing you’ll need to do before starting your Doughboy Pool installation is to check to see if building permits or utility clearances are required. For example, the National BOCA Code requires the pool to be a minimum of six feet from the property line and a minimum of ten feet from the street. Obey all safety codes for fencing and all electrical codes.
A straightforward above-ground pool installation is the simplest, most budget-friendly approach. Doughboy above-ground pools come in different sizes of either round or oval shapes, making it easy for you to find one that fits your needs and tastes. These pools must be assembled on level ground. This means that ground preparation, including possible excavation or grading, will be required.
Another option for an above-ground installation is to build a wooden deck around the pool with stairs for easy access. The deck would effectively hide the pool walls, making it function more like an in-ground pool.

Recessed Installations
If you’re looking for a truer in-ground pool look, a recessed Doughboy pool installation might be the right choice for you. This type of installation involves excavating the ground and inserting the pool into the ground. This gives the pool a more finished, in-ground look while still being more affordable than a fully in-ground installation.
With this approach, you have the option to install a pool surround complete with a seating area or a patio. You can use pavers or other materials to create a level surface and add weather-resistant furniture for lounging. Adding a pergola or a gazebo can provide shade and make the area more inviting. You can also add plants, flowers, or lighting to create a cozy, elegant atmosphere.

Semi-Onground Installations
A semi-onground (a.k.a. “semi-inground”) pool installation is another option that combines the best of both worlds. This type of installation involves embedding a portion of the pool into the earth, leaving the remaining portion above the ground. This is a good choice when your backyard includes hills or uneven terrain. Part of the hill or grade is excavated, making room for the pool to sit on leveled ground within the topography.
With this type of pool installation, you have the liberty to incorporate multiple outdoor living elements. You can create a multi-level deck around a portion of the pool, using the different levels to create separate areas for lounging, dining, and swimming. Alternatively, you can incorporate something more in the realm of a patio or pool surround for the recessed portion of the pool.
Be sure to review both Doughboy’s Round/Oval instructions, as well as Doughboy’s Below Grade instructions prior to attempting this style of pool installation.
To achieve a true “vacation at home” feel, consider adding a cabana to the backyard. These versatile structures can provide a shaded space for lounging, and you can decorate it with different colors and accents to create a tropical or beachy atmosphere.
