The Different Types of Pool Filters
When looking at pool filters, it is essential to know that there are three main types of filters: sand, cartridge, and diatomaceous earth (or D.E.). Depending on the size of your pool and how much filtration you want will determine what kind of filter you get.
Sand Pool Filter
Sand filters have the lowest level of filtration but can handle large pools and are pretty simple to clean and replace. Sand alternatives are available that increase the filtration level. These filters use silica-based sand to filter out waste and are easy to replace when the time comes. They usually last five to seven years.
Cartridge Pool Filter
Cartridge filters have a higher level of filtration than sand but do not last as long. Cartridge filters usually need to be replaced every two to three years. They also cost more than sand filters. These filters will require regular maintenance and are more challenging to clean than sand filters, but they are an excellent option for finer filtration and small pools.
D.E. Pool Filter
Diatomaceous earth, or D.E., provides the finest level of filtration that a pool filter can offer. This type of filtration is similar to sand, as it uses a powder to catch the waste in the water and keep it from returning to the pool.
D.E. filters are easy to replace and last just as long as sand filters. They are more expensive, though, than cartridge or sand filters.
D.E. filters also have a complex annual cleaning that can be time-consuming. Part of this cleaning process involves something called backwashing. Some places have laws against backwashing a D.E. filter, so be sure you know what is and is not allowed in your area before you start cleaning. These filters, though, will give you the best continuous breakdown of particles for your pool.

The best pool filter for your above-ground pool depends on your needs and how much money you want to spend. All the filters will keep your water clean and safe so long as it is maintained and used correctly with proper water care.
