How to Correctly Care for Your Pool in the Off-Season

As we bid farewell to the warmer months, it’s time to shift our attention to caring for your pool in the off-season. The best way to do this is by winterizing your beloved Doughboy® pool

Winter presents unique challenges, but with a straightforward approach, you can ensure that your pool and its components are well-protected during the colder months. Let’s break down the process into simple, practical steps.

1. Connect with Your Authorized Doughboy Dealer

Your first step in this winterization journey is reaching out to your trusted authorized Doughboy dealer. These professionals are equipped with the knowledge to guide you through the specific steps tailored to your specific model. Avoiding missteps is important, and their straightforward advice ensures a hassle-free winterization process.

2. Clean It Up

A clean start is a smart start. Before winter sets in, take the time to clear out any debris that might have found its way into the water during the summer. Leaves, twigs, and other bits can cause trouble if left unattended. By starting with a clean slate, you set the stage for a smoother reopening in the spring.

3. Keep the Chemistry in Check

Water chemistry might sound complicated, but it’s all about balance. Use a simple test kit to check the pH, total alkalinity, and chlorine levels. Adjust them as needed to stay within the recommended range. This not only ensures your pool stays in good condition but also prevents the growth of algae and bacteria over the winter.

4. Don’t Drain It All

The temptation to drain your pool entirely is understandable, but here’s the plain truth — it’s NOT necessary. Draining it completely exposes the liner to potential damage from debris and bacterial growth, as well as the possibility that the pool walls can collapse. Also, when drained of all water, the pool liner will pull away from the pool wall and will not stretch back into its original position. This is why it’s important to NEVER empty an above ground pool when winterizing.

Instead, per Doughboy Pool instructions, drain the water level to about six inches below the eyeball return fitting. This ensures that winterization chemicals can do their job effectively, preserving the integrity of your liner and pool walls.

5. Bid Adieu to the Pump and Filter

Your pool pump and filter have been the unsung heroes of the swimming season, and now it’s time to let them rest. Turn off both, disconnect them, and find a dry, sheltered spot for their winter hiatus. No need for fancy arrangements — just ensure they’re safe from freezing temperatures. This simple step ensures they’ll be in top shape when you start them up again.

6. Wrap It Up

Now, let’s dress your Doughboy pool for winter success. Doughboy resilient covers are crafted from robust polyethylene fabric that defies the cold without cracking, splitting, or tearing. These covers are not only durable but also lightweight, making them easy to put on and take off compared to bulkier vinyl options. The reinforced seams ensure longevity, resisting rips and frays, while the high concentration of UV stabilizers provides years of protection against the sun’s effects.

7. Utilize a Pool Pillow

A properly used pool pillow, placed strategically in the middle of your pool, helps the winter cover from sinking into the pool during the winter months. This allows for easier cleaning, removal, and reopening of your pool in the spring.

Winterizing your Doughboy pool is a practical investment in its longevity and your future enjoyment. Each step is straightforward, and when spring arrives, your pool will be ready for another season of fun. Trust the process, lean on the expertise of your authorized Doughboy dealer, and bid farewell to your pool with the confidence that it’ll be in great shape when the warmer days return.
